                  Back Packing Information

Backpacking can be a fantastic experience if one prepares properly. Weight is an important consideration when backpacking. Therefore, many items normally enjoyed on a camping trip must be left at home. Most all foods are of a freeze dried variety to save on bulk and weight. No bottled or caned beverages such as Coke are permitted. Water from streams must be sterilized. While much junk food is light in weight, one must leave it a home as well because of the bulk. A pack is just so big and you can only put so much in it. Items not placed inside the pack must be secured on the outside of the pack so that they do not bounce as you hike. You must determine what is important to make the backpacking experience enjoyable. In Winter, heavier clothes along with stocking hat, gloves and long underwear are necessary but add to the weight of your pack.

Patrol food and patrol gear is distributed among patrol members based on the weight of these items. The tent is too heavy and large for one person to pack and carry. Therefore, one person packs the pole bag and tent fly while the other tent mate packs the tent bag containing the tent. Every Scout packs and carries his part of patrol equipment, patrol food and his part of the tent. These items added to personal items and clothing yields full pack and a heavy pack. Your pack should weigh no more than 25% of you total body weight. I you weigh 100 pounds, your pack should weigh no more than 25 pounds. Backpacking can yield many opportunities and challenges. Weather is always an important factor in backpacking. The way to success is to "BE PREPARED".
